Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, our representative will greet you. After a brief introduction, you’ll be transferred by private vehicle to your hotel in the heart of Kathmandu. Along the way, catch your first glimpse of this vibrant city, rich in history and bustling with life. Once checked in, the day is yours to relax or explore nearby areas like Thamel. Later, we’ll hold a briefing to discuss your adventure ahead.

Spend the evening exploring Kathmandu or picking up last-minute essentials.
After breakfast, we’ll transfer you to the airport for a one-hour flight to Nepalgunj, a bustling town near the Indian border. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and, if time permits, visit the revered Bageshwari Temple. Nepalgunj’s vibrant markets reflect the cultural blend of Indian and Nepali influences. Relax and enjoy the local flavors.
An early morning scenic flight takes you to Juphal, the starting point of your trek. As the plane lands amidst rolling hills, the rugged beauty of Dolpo greets you. Our local trekking crew will meet you at the airstrip, and after a warm welcome, you’ll begin the short hike to Dunai. The trail descends gently through terraced fields and past quaint villages, following the Bheri River. Overnight at a guesthouse in Dunai, the administrative center of Dolpo.
Begin your descent, following the Phoksundo River downstream through dense forests of pine, fir, and birch. Enjoy views of waterfalls and rocky cliffs along the way. The trail offers glimpses of wildlife, such as Himalayan Tahr and langurs, and passes small settlements, providing an opportunity to experience local culture before returning to Chhepka.
The trek begins with a gradual ascent through lush forests of pine, birch, and juniper, accompanied by the sounds of birds and flowing streams. The path follows the Phoksundo River, offering views of cascading waterfalls and rocky landscapes. You’ll pass small settlements and herder huts before reaching Jharana Hotel, set in a tranquil environment at 3,040m.
The trail ascends through pristine alpine forests, with breathtaking views of valleys and cliffs. A highlight of the day is the spectacular Suligad/Phoksundo Waterfall. As you approach Ringmo Gaon, the forest gives way to rocky landscapes. Located by the shores of Shey Phoksundo Lake, the village offers panoramic views of the turquoise waters surrounded by snow-capped peaks.
In the late afternoon, you’ll also have the option to visit the ancient Tso Gompa monastery 3800m/1265ft, a 900-year old Bonpo monastery perched on a ridge overlooking the lake.
There are several options today, depending on the group. These can include visiting Tso Gompa (if you didn’t do this yesterday), or you may choose to trek 2 hours to marvel at your surroundings from a viewpoint at 4200m/1377ft.
After lunch, you’ll return to Ringmo village, where you’ll have the opportunity to visit the local school. This visit provides an insight into the educational challenges and opportunities in this remote region. You’ll have a chance to interact with the students and teachers, learn about their daily routines, and witness how traditional and modern practices coexist in their education system. The remainder of the day can be spent exploring the village, relaxing by the lake, or simply soaking in the tranquil beauty of the area. This is a perfect time to reflect on the unique blend of natural wonder and cultural heritage that defines the Dolpo region.
After breakfast, begin your trek along the Thuli Bheri River, enjoying views of surrounding hills and occasional glimpses of snow-capped peaks. The trail passes through quaint villages such as Hanke, marking the entrance to Shey Phoksundo National Park, a haven for blue sheep and Himalayan monals. Continue through serene pine and juniper forests, with peaceful surroundings, before reaching Chhepka, a small village set amidst terraced fields and dense forests.
On your final day of trekking, descend through lush forests and along the Phoksundo River. The trail alternates between flat sections and gentle descents, with occasional short uphill climbs. After 5-6 hours, you’ll arrive back in Juphal, where you can relax, reflect on your journey, and prepare for your return.
You will take the earliest flight from Jhupal to Nepalgunj. Upon reaching Nepalgunj, you will return to Kathmandu on the next available flight. After arriving in Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your hotel.
This day is reserved as a contingency to accommodate any unforeseen delays during the trek, such as weather-related disruptions or logistical challenges. If not required for contingencies, it offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the cultural and historical treasures of Kathmandu, a city renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
